The Champions Cup quarter-final between Northampton and the Bulls single-handedly concentrated all the ecological problems posed by the European Rugby Cup. It was the grand finale of a journey that ran counter to the eco-responsibility imperatives of our time.

On March 29, the Pretoria-based franchise crossed the planet to play a match in Dublin against Leinster (47-14). The following week, they were back in South Africa to host Lyon in the Champions Cup Round of 16 (59-19). No time to celebrate this qualification as the Bulls boarded a transcontinental plane to face Northampton in the quarter-finals.
